Genetic Counseling and Testing for Breast Cancer Risk
Study Identifies Most Important Genetic Factors in Breast Cancer Risk
Back to Health A to Z. We all carry certain genes that are normally protective against cancer. These genes correct any DNA damage that naturally happens when cells divide. BRCA genes are not the only cancer risk genes. Researchers recently identified more than new gene variants associated with an increased risk of breast, prostate and ovarian cancer. Two large studies give a much sharper picture of which inherited mutations raise the risk of breast cancer for women without a family history of the disease, and how common these flawed genes are in the general population. Doctors say the results published Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine can help women make better decisions about screening, preventive surgery or other steps. King, a University of Washington scientist, had no role in the new studies but discovered the first breast cancer predisposition gene, BRCA1.
